As you approach your 65th birthday, it is crucial to start researching Medicare options and paying attention to enrollment periods. It is important to note that Social Security retirement income benefits, which become available at age 67, are separate from Medicare. To qualify for Medicare, you must be a US citizen or a permanent resident who has lived in the United States for at least five continuous years.

Even if you are under 65, you may still be eligible for Medicare. Take our quiz to see if you qualify to receive Medicare benefits right now.

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) lasts for seven months, starting three months before your 65th birthday and continuing through your birthday month and the three months following it.
